About Greyhounds at Gentle Giants Rescue and Adoptions
Greyhounds: Greyhounds are tall slender dogs. Their heads are long and narrow, wide between the ears, with long tapering muzzles. Their small ears are held back and folded and are semi-perked when they are excited. Their eyes are dark in color. Their slightly arched necks are long. Their legs are long with the front legs being perfectly straight. The chests are wide and deep. Their long tails taper with a slight upward curve. Their short, fine coats come in all colors.
Greyhounds are brave, and devoted. Greyhounds are also intelligent, laid-back, charming and loving, but they are reserved. They should be well socialized to prevent timidity. Greyhounds are gentle and even-tempered - both racing Greyhounds and pets. Greyhounds seldom present difficulties with other dogs and are normally good with children, though they do not usually like rough-house play. Indoors, Greyhounds are calm and sociable to a point where they can even be considered lazy. They bond strongly with their own family, have tremendous stamina, and do not bark much. Greyhounds are not particularly vigilant, but make wonderful pets.
Greyhounds are a very ancient breed and one of the fastest dogs in the world. Greyhounds can reach speeds of over 40 miles per hour. Carvings of Greyhounds were found in tombs in Egypt dating back to 2900 B.C. They are thought to have originally descended from the Arabian Sloughi and brought to England by traders before 900 AD. The breed was first brought to America by the Spanish explorers in the 1500s. Greyhounds were used for hunting and have keen eyesight. Greyhounds were recognized by the AKC in 1885.
